Driving up the centre of the North Island on the Desert Road is always a special adventure. On the west side is the magnificence of Tongariro National Park and towards the east are rolling hills leading to the Kaimanawa Ranges. Both are spectacular and if you get really lucky you might spot some wild horses galloping by.
